The most distinctive feature of this tepui are its nearly-circular sink holes, which are still a mystery to
geologist s andbiologist s. The holes have a diameter of 350 meters and go down from the flat top of the mountain straight down for 350 meters. The vertical walls have created an isolatedecosystem at the bottom, with some species of plants and animals not found anywhere else in the world. These sink holes were first seen and explored in 1974. David Nott's book "Into the Lost World" describes the descent and the scientific investigation of the surface of the plateau.External links
