cities =Thousand Island Lake is a large
alpine lake inCalifornia 's Sierra Nevada. It is within the boundaries of theAnsel Adams Wilderness , and accessible by either theJohn Muir Trail , the High Trail, or the River Trail from Agnews Meadow on the road toDevil's Postpile atMammoth Lakes . The lake also lies along theSierra High Route .Thousand Island Lake sits at the base of
Banner Peak in theRitter Range . It is the source of the Middle ForkSan Joaquin River , which flows west into theSan Joaquin Valley .Ansel Adams made this lake famous with his black and white photographs. The lake is named for the many islands that dot its surface. It was probably named by Theodore S. Solomons, as it appears on his 1896 map; John Muir called it "Islet Lake."
