- Garcia Fernandes
Garcia Fernandes (d. c.
1565 ) was a PortugueseRenaissance painter. Like many of painters of the time, Garcia Fernandes was a pupil in theLisbon workshop ofJorge Afonso , who was King Manuel's royal painter.In the 1530s he worked in
Coimbra for the Santa Clara Convent and theSanta Cruz Monastery . Between 1533 and 1534, together withCristóvão de Figueiredo andGregório Lopes , he was responsible for the three paintedaltarpiece s of theMonastery of Ferreirim , nearLamego . Later, he painted panels for the transept of the Church of St Francis inÉvora .In
Lisbon , he was responsible for the altarpiece of the Trindade Convent and the panel for the St Bartholomew Chapel ofLisbon Cathedral (c. 1537AD ), as well as a large oil painting, "The Marriage of Saint Alexis" (once known as "The Marriage of KingManuel of Portugal ") (1541), now in the "Museum of São Roque". The painting (oil on wood, 210 x 165 cm) was originally in theChurch of Nossa Senhora da Conceição Velha in Lisbon, as part of the property of the Brotherhood of the Misericórdia, who brought it to São Roque after the1755 Lisbon Earthquake when the Brotherhood was given the formerJesuit church as the new base of their charitable activities. His paintings can be seen in several churches and monasteries around Portugal, as well as in the
National Museum of Ancient Art (Lisbon) and theMachado de Castro Museum (Coimbra).References
