Gregg Bingham (born March 13, 1951 in Evanston, Illinois) was a National Football League linebacker from 1973 through 1984. He played college football at Purdue. He may have played for Gordon Tech high school where he is was a tight end and linebacker and was the teams leading tackler. Additionally he played for Marmion Millitary Academy. He played college football at Purdue where he was a multi year all Big Ten selection and again was the teams leading tackler in his 4 years there. He graduated in 4 years with a degree in industrial economics and has since continued his economic education with a Masters and PHD from UHK.He went on to play for the Houston Oilers of the NFL for 12 seasons as the starting middle linebacker beginning with the very first pre season game of his rookie year and continued to do so until his retirement earning him the nick name " ironman ".A sure handed tackler, it was commonly known throughout the league if he touched you, you were tackled, period. Also he played on all the special teams and he even returned punts when the return man was injured which is a testament to his sure handedness. Add to that, before the NFL teams roster was expanded to over 40 players there was only room for 2 active quarterbacks and Gregg was listed as the 3rd, although he only took 3 snaps in a league game it sure was " different " seeing a linebacker warming up the running backs throwing them bullets in pre game warm ups. Al Davis of the Oakland Raiders once said " he is well known for his cunning and guile and it wouldn't surprise me if he made every tackle " With 1,970 tackles, he has the most tackles in franchise history, earning a place on Houston’s All-time dream team. After knocking people to the ground year in and year out for 20 years he is arguably the world's leading tackler and as Paul Camillo put it, " if he is not then who is?"
