Littleton, County Tipperary

Littleton ("An Baile Beag" in Irish) is a village on a crossroads on the main Dublin - Cork road (N8) in County Tipperary. It is located about km to mi | 18 | abbr=yes | precision=0 northeast of Cashel, just to the southeast of Thurles.

In 2002 it had a population of exactly 500.

As well as being a familiar name to travellers between Dublin and Cork, Littleton is closely associated with Bord na Móna peat harvesting in the nearby complex of raised bogs. Littleton is also home to the long-established 'Moycarkey Band', the Seán Treacy Pipe Band. Ref: [http://www.bnm.ie/downloads/raised_bogs.pdf] .

ome History

St. Ruadhan of Lorrha founded a monastery on a raised island in the middle of the bog at Littleton.

It is called Derrynaflan and it became famous when a 9th Century Chalice, (Derrynaflan Chalice) paten, stand and strainer were found there in 1980. They are now in the National Museum in Dublin. Ref: [http://www.tipp.ie/townsandvillages/tipperary/littleto.htm]
