Gene D. Block

Gene D. Block

Gene D. Block (born 1948) is currently serving as the ninth chancellor of the University of California, Los Angeles. His selection was announced on December 21, 2006, and he took office on August 1, 2007, succeeding acting chancellor Norman Abrams.

Prior to accepting the chancellorship at UCLA, Dr. Block was provost and Professor of Biology at the University of Virginia. He was succeeded by Dr. Arthur Garson, Jr., MD, MPH.

Block, 58, is an accomplished biologist whose research is involved in the cellular basis of circadian rhythms. He received the A.B. from Stanford University in 1970, followed by the M.S. and Ph.D. in 1972 and 1975, respectively, from the University of Oregon; all of these degrees were in psychology. He returned to Stanford for postdoctoral work in 1975 until 1978 when he began his professorial career at the University of Virginia.
