Eddie Lawson andWayne Gardner return from injuries. The front row is Gardner, Lawson,Wayne Rainey andKevin Schwantz . Last year, Schwantz was in the lead with one lap to go when his bike died, so he’ll be eager to make up for a lost opportunity.Gardner and Rainey get good starts, but Gardner gets the first apex, followed by Rainey, Lawson,
Mick Doohan andPierfrancesco Chili . Schwantz got another bad start and is down around eighth; the Suzuki squirms as Schwantz impatiently tries to go from eight to sixth in one turn, but he stays up in seventh for the moment.Rainey muscles his way past Gardner to take the lead, with Lawson making it a trio with a gap to the rest of the field.
Schwantz closes the gap to take third from Gardner, who is slowing and sitting up on the straight, looking like he has a mechanical.
Schwantz is now past Lawson and has Rainey in his sights, with Doohan and Sarron in fourth and fifth spot.
Rainey now has Schwantz on his tail, and Schwantz seems to be waiting for the last lap or two before making his move. Lawson is a few seconds behind now.
Before the last lap, Schwantz takes the lead and holds it to the line, with Rainey a close second and Lawson an impressive third after being away for seven rounds.
