Robert Trappl (
16 January 1939 ,Vienna Austria ) is an Austriancybernetics andartificial intelligence researcher. He is a professor at the Center for Brain Research,Medical University of Vienna , Austria.Biography
Robert Trappl was born in
1939 inVienna . He studiedsociology at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna, where he was trained as anelectrical engineer as well. He later received aPhD in psychology, with a minor inastronomy .He is the director of the Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence (OFAI), as well as head of the Institute of Medical Cybernetics and Artificial Intelligence at the
Medical University of Vienna, Austria .He has given lectures in many countries and he has worked as a consultant for national and international companies and organizations (OECD, UNIDO, WHO).
He is Editor-in-Chief of "Applied Artificial Intelligence: An International Journal" and "Cybernetics and Systems: An International Journal", both published by Taylor & Francis, USA. He has been on the editorial board of numerous scientific journals and has been a member of program committees of many national and international conferences. From 1986 to 1988 he was the first president of the
International Federation for Systems Research (IFSR).Work
His main research focus at present is the investigation of the potential contributions of
Artificial Intelligence methods to the avoidance of outbreaks of wars or in ending them, and the development of intelligent and emotional personality agents both for synthetic actors infilm s,television andinteractive media , especially games, and with a view on their consequeces for theories on cognition and emotion.
