- Portugal at the Olympics
The participation of Portugal at the Olympics began on Scandinavian soil, for both the Summer and Winter editions of the
Olympic Games . With the creation of theOlympic Committee of Portugal (the Portuguesenational Olympic Committee ) in 1909, and recognition by theInternational Olympic Committee (IOC) in the same year,Portugal was the thirteenth nation to join theOlympic Movement .Three years later, it made its first appearance at the
1912 Summer Olympics , held inStockholm ,Sweden . Since then, Portugal has participated in every edition of the Games of the Olympiad, summing up a total of 22 presences, which make it the eighteenth most assiduous nation. As of 2008, Portugal has collected a total of 22Olympic medal s (four gold, seven silver, and eleven bronze medals).The Olympic Winter Games had its first edition in 1924, but it was only 28 years later that they witnessed Portugal's first participation, at the
1952 Winter Olympics , inOslo ,Norway . Following a gap of 36 years, the nation was again represented at the1988 Winter Olympics ofCalgary ,Canada , by abobsleigh team. Since then, Portugal only missed two editions (1992 and 2002). At the last Winter Games, inTurin ,Italy , across-country ski er,Danny Silva , was the sole representative.
