- Sala Regia (Vatican)
The Sala Regia (Regal Room) is a state hall of the Vatican Palace, in the
Vatican City .Although not intended as such, this broad room is really an
antechamber to theSistine Chapel , reached by theScala Regia . To the left of the entrance formerly stood the papalthrone , which is now at the opposite side before the door leading to theCappella Paolina . The hall was begun underPope Paul III byAntonio da Sangallo the Younger and was completed in1573 . The elegantbarrel vault is provided with the highly graceful and very impressiveplaster decorations ofPerin del Vaga . Thestucco ornaments over the doors are byDaniele da Volterra . The longitudinal walls are broken on the one side by two, and on the other by three, large doors, between whichLivio Agresti ,Giorgio Vasari andTaddeo Zuccari have introduced very powerful frescoes, whose effect is more than ornamental. Agresti's fresco has a political meaning, too: it represents "Peter II of Aragon offering the Kingdom to Pope Innocent III".They all depict momentous turning-points in the life of the Church, among others the return ofGregory XI fromAvignon toRome , theBattle of Lepanto , the raising of the ban from Henry IV, and the reconciliation ofPope Alexander III withFrederick Barbarossa . This hall served originally for the reception ofprince s and royalambassador s, so its name. Today the consistories are held in it, and an occasional musicalrecital in the presence of thepope ; during a conclave it is a favouritepromenade for the cardinals.ource
