- Xi-Ping Zhu
Zhu Xiping is a Professor of
Mathematics atZhongshan University . He collaborated withCao Huaidong ofLehigh University in verifyingGrigori Perelman 's proof of thePoincaré conjecture . The Cao-Zhu team was one of three teams formed for this purpose. The other teams were the Tian-Morgan team (Gang Tian ofPrinceton University and John Morgan ofColumbia University ) and the Kleiner-Lott team (Bruce Kleiner ofYale University and John Lott of theUniversity of Michigan ).Award
In December
2004 , Zhu won the Morningside Medal of Mathematics at the Third International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians (ICCM), a triennial congress hosted by institutions in Mainland China,Taiwan , andHong Kong on a rotating basis. According to ICCM [ [http://www.hkedcity.net/article/project/iccm2004/iccm_e.phtml The Third International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians | What is ICCM? ] ] , "Awardees (of the Morningside Medal) are selected by a panel of international renowned mathematicians with the aim to encourage outstanding mathematicians of Chinese descent in their pursuit of mathematical truth."Notes
