Taipei Private Yan Ping High School (zh-stp|t=臺北市私立延平高級中學|s=台北市私立延平高级中学|p=Táiběi Shì Si Lì Gao Gí Zhong Xúe) .The campus is located in the Da-an District in Taipei, Taiwan. It is considered a top school amongst Taipei's and even Taiwan's high schools.

History

The Beginning

Soon after the end of World War II and the Japanese colonial period, Mr. Zhu Zhao-yang ( _zh. 朱昭陽), who was serving in Ōkura-shō, the present Ministry of Finance of Japan, and Lawyer Song Chin-ying ( _zh. 宋進英) came back to Taiwan in hope to improve the education environment of their very own motherland.

The two planned to establish a "University" and—on the suggestion of the invited chair, Mr. Lin Xian-tang ( _zh. 林獻堂)—named the institution "Yan Ping", a dedication to the famous general of Ming Dynasty, Koxinga ( _zh. 鄭成功).

The school started operation as a college with only two departments—Economics and Law. The opening ceremony was held on the campus of Kainan Commercial High School on October 10 1946, and there was only a small electric bulb used for lighting. The then eleven hundred students were attentively listening to Mr. Zhu's speaking under the moonlight:

"In this chaotic and dismal time, we have to offer this society a slight ray of hope, and we have to be like the glittering light of the luminous firefly found only in a very harsh region of the world."

It came to be known as Taiwan's First college, founded by its own people.

Affection of the 228 Incident

Just after the first semester on February 27, during the winter vacation, the shocking 228 Incident happened. And the school was soon shut down by the government with the reason of hiding weapons.

The Regeneration

Some years later, the original founders actively searched for the revival of the school and their great efforts finally won the trust of the government to allow the school to re-open in September 1948, under the name of Yan Ping Complementary Night High School, using the classrooms of Ximen Elementary School. Although its social position is lower than that of a college, most people regarded it as the revival of Yan Ping College and its spirit. They hired many well-known professors in that time, including the former President of Taiwan, Lee Tenghwei ( _zh. 李登輝).

The Palace Above the Water

In 1953, the school moved to present location of Chien-gou S. Road and completed the construction of a new education building with only two stories high. The school was surround by water fields, so many gave it a nickname of "The Palace Above the Water".

The school had a huge problem on enrolling new students in the beginning. They could only make up one single class at the first 5 years, then expanded into 3 per year. The number of students increased from three hundred to three thousand. However, most of them came here because of the failure on entry exam(the social position of private schools is far lower than the publics in Taiwan).

From 1968, Taiwan started the 9-year compulsory education system, which gave Yan Ping a total new hope. There are no more differences between public junior high school and the private. More parents were willing to send their child here to receive education. The newcomers of junior high department did very well on the three-year-later high school entry exam.

The First Private High

In 1979 established the "direct-promoted class", which means students can study here for entire 6 years without any other additional entry exam. The percentage of seniors entering National University rose substantially. Yan Ping became one of the top 15 high schools throughout the nation, also the first place among all the private high schools.

Now, the recruit procedure are totally self-operated. Students should go with the score identification of Basic Competence Test (" _zh. 國民中學基本學力測驗"). There are still many students came here because the result on the exam was not as good as expected. It's still somehow similar to "the shlter of failures". The campus has been re-build several times and the school contains 4 buildings today.
