"Pinocchio" is a 2002 live-action family film directed by and starring Roberto Benigni. The film is based on the original story developed by Carlo Lorenzini (or Collodi), with Benigni portraying the main character. Rotten Tomatoes listed it as one of the worst reviewed films of all time, receiving a 0% by the critics. [cite web

accessdate=2008-03-08] However, most complaints were due to the horrendous dubbing used to create the English version of the film. While there have been criticisms that apply to all versions, such as Benigni's so-called "silly" costume, the original italian version was nonetheless an award winning film.

It was shot in Italy and Kalkara, Malta. The great white shark that swallowed Geppetto and Pinocchio was in the 1883 original novel rather than a whale like in the 1940 Disney animated film. Lampwick's name became "Lucignolo-Leonardo" (Topher Grace's voice) for this motion picture. The English tranlations were Breckin Meyer (Pinocchio),David Suchet (Geppetto), Glenn Close (Blue Fairy),John Cleese (Talking Cricket),Cheech Marin (The Fox),Eddie Griffin (The Cat),Giacomo Gonnella (Carabiniere),James Belushi (Farmer),Eric Idle (Medoro),Sandro Dori (Medro's Owner),Kevin James (Mangiafuoco),Regis Philbin (Ringmaster),and Queen Latifah (Dove). The actors Gonnella and Dori are natives of Italy.
