Simon Srebnik

Simon Srebnik was one of two people to survive the Nazi death camp of Chelmno. He survived along with Mordechaï Podchlebnik.

Camp life

He was forced to burn bodies, and grind bones. Furthermore he was shot before the Allies came to the camp, but survived. He was 13 at the time and later returned to the Catholic church where he was forced to work.

The reason for his survival was that he was the boy who rowed a boat down the river every day, and was spared due to his lovely singing voice. he was made to sing miliatry songs for the Nazi SS guards as part of their entertainment.

Death

He was interviewed by French film maker Claude Lanzmann for the epic documentary film "Shoah" made by Claude Lanzmann in 1985. He and Podchlebnik were the only two survivors of the camp. According to British Holocaust researcher Alan Heath Simon Srebnik died in 2005 at age 75.
