Antonello Palombi

Antonello Palombi (born in Spoleto, Italy) is an Italian operatic tenor.

Career

He began his studies with Kate Gamberucci and Maestro Thiolas.

In 1990 he made his debut as "Pinkerton" in Puccini’s "Madama Butterfly".

In the following years he sang in several operas in many Italian as well as international theatres. Ranging from Mozart and Rossini to Verdi and Puccini he was "Duca di Mantova" in "Rigoletto", "Alfredo" in "La traviata", "Fenton" in "Falstaff", "Don Ramiro" in "La Cenerentola", "Ferrando" in "Così fan tutte", "Nemorino" in "L'elisir d'amore" and also "Don Josè" in "Carmen", "Macduff" in "Macbeth" and "Edmondo" in "Manon Lescaut".

In the last few years, he consolidated his career in the “"lirico"”, “"lirico spinto"” repertory. In 1997 he was "Des Grieux" in "Manon Lescaut" at Glyndebourne Festival Opera conducted by Sir John Eliot Gardiner as well as "Enea" in "Les Troyens" of Berlioz in a production of Granteatro La Fenice in Venice.

In 1998 he sang Verdi’s Requiem in Germany and in London ("St Paul's Cathedral") again under the baton of Sir Gardiner. He made his debut as "Cavaradossi" in "Tosca" in Padua and as "Radames" in "Aida" at Granteatro La Fenice in Venice then he was "Don Josè" again, conducted by Gustav Kuhn at the New National Theatre in Tokyo.

He began 1999 singing Verdi’s "Arie da Camera" in Parma, Busseto and Mantua then, still from Verdi, "Inno delle Nazioni" at the celebrations of the Italian Republic Day on June 2 in Rome conducted by Roberto Abbado. He was in Glyndebourne for the revival of the 1997 production of "Manon Lescaut" and then made his debut as "Rodolfo" in "La bohème" at Teatro Giocosa in Savona. He sang at Teatro Regio in Turin in "Madama Butterfly".

During year 2000 he was "Radames" in Ravenna with the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Paolo Olmi and "Des Grieux" in "Manon Lescaut" under the baton of Yuri Ahronovich in a production of Granteatro La Fenice in Venice and Copenhagen. In the same year he made his debut as "Loris Ipanoff" in Giordano’s "Fedora" at Teatro Regio in Turin and as "Avito" in Montemezzi’s "L'amore dei tre re" at the Opera House in Zurich.

He’s back in Zurich in 2001 debuting "Ismaele" in "Nabucco" and the title role in "Don Carlos", followed by the debuts of Gabriele Adorno in "Simon Boccanegra" at Teatro Bellini in Catania, "Cassio" in "Otello" in Zurich with José Cura, Daniela Dessì and Ruggero Raimondi and "Jacopo" in "I due Foscari" at Teatro dell'Opera in Rome.

2002 is another year of debuts. "Pollione" in "Norma" and "Faust" in Boito’s "Mefistofele" in Turin, "Paco" in "La vida breve" and "Pedro" in "La Serrana" at Teatro Sao Carlos in Lisbon. In the meantime he sang at Frankfurt Oper in "Manon Lescaut" and "Tosca", went back to Zurich for some more performances of "Otello" ("Cassio") and flew to Budapest to sing in "Aida" as well as during a Gala Concert at the Hungarian State Opera House. He ended the year as "Pinkerton" at Deutsche Oper in Berlin and singing in "Macbeth" at Teatro Regio in Turin.

In 2003 he was in Zurich for "Nabucco" and "Don Carlos" and in Budapest for "Aida". He sang in two Verismo Gala Concerts in Leipzig and then returned to Frankfurt as "Des Grieux" and "Cavaradossi". "Des Grieux" is the role that he sang at Bavarian State Opera in Munich. He participated at the New Year’s Eve Gala in Frankfurt where he began 2004 as "Cavaradossi" in "Tosca".

2004 brought him to Cagliari for his debut as "Calaf" in "Turandot" at Teatro Lirico and to Seattle where he debuted with great success the role of "Dick Johnson" in "La fanciulla del West". In summer he was "Ismaele" in "Nabucco" in Rome at the Baths of Caracalla and in fall he sang as "Radames" at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. It is December when he is in Munich at the Bavarian State Opera to sing "Des Grieux" in Puccini’s "Manon Lescaut". After this he finished 2004 at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin with a very successful performance of "Manon Lescaut".

He is in Turin, in 2005, as "Avito" in Montemezzi's "L'amore dei tre re" then he made his debut as "Don Alvaro" in Verdi's "La forza del destino" in Frankfurt with great success.

It is at the Hamer Hall in Melbourne that he debuts "Otello", in the homonymous opera of Verdi, acclaimed by the audience and the press. Another big success is the production of "Manon Lescaut" at the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki where the audience was in jubilation.

The series of successes continued with his debut as "Canio" in "Pagliacci" at the Dallas Music Hall with standing ovation at each performance at the moment of his exit for the bow. His next destination was West Palm Beach where he sang the role of "Radames" in "Aida".

Right after he flew to Turin beginning 2006 with a new production of "Manon Lescaut" with actor Jean Reno at his debut as a director. Detroit saw him singing in a new production of "Aida" with great success of public but his "Cavaradossi" in Cincinnati's new production of "Tosca" was an authentic triumph every performance ending with the audience's standing ovation at his final exit on stage.

He took over the role of "Radames" at the opening of the 2006-07 season at La Scala on 7 December 2006 in the new production of "Aida" by Franco Zeffirelli. During the second performance (10 December 2006), Roberto Alagna was "booed" and "whistled" by the "loggione" (opera fans who sit in the less-expensive seats at the very back of the Scala), and walked off the stage. Palombi entered on stage wearing jeans and a black shirt.

He sang in major Opera houses in the world like in London (Royal Albert Hall), Munich (Bavarian State Opera), Glyndebourne, Venice (Granteatro La Fenice), Turin (Teatro Regio), Ravenna, Cosenza, Pisa, Modena, Lucca, Livorno, Baden Baden, Wiesbaden, Ludwigsburg, Cagliari (Teatro Lirico - Teatro Romano), Florence (Teatro Verdi), Lisbon, Tokyo (New National Theatre - Suntory Hall), Mantua, Treviso, Rovigo, Savona, Bologna, Riga, Budapest, Padua, Copenhagen, Zurich, Zagreb, Valladolid, Catania, Frankfurt, Rome (Teatro dell'Opera-Terme di Caracalla), Berlin (Deutsche Oper-Schauspielhaus), Seattle (Seattle Opera Mc. Caw Hall), Melbourne (Hamer Hall), Dallas, Palm Beach, Detroit, Cincinnati.

He sang under the baton of conducters like Roberto Abbado, Acs, Ahronovitch, Andretta, Aprea, Armiliato, Barbacini, Bartoletti, Bellincampi, Bellugi, Benzi, Bernet, Caetani, Campanella, Campori, Carella, Carignani, DelaCote, Desderi, Fedi, Fedoseyev, Fisher, Franci, Gandolfi, Gardiner, Gyorivanyi Rath, Handt, Karabtchevsky, Kuhn, Märkl, Martin, Mastrangelo, Medveczky, Mega, Olmi, Pacor, Palumbo, Pidò, Pons, Ranzani, Renzetti, Santi, Viotti, Zambelli.

His future engagements include "Andrea Chénier", "Il tabarro", "Il trovatore", "Aida", "Pagliacci" in Germany, the U.S. and his debut at "La Scala in Milan.
