- Ludwig Hopf
Ludwig Hopf (1884 in
Nürnberg ,Germany –December 21 ,1939 inDublin ,Ireland ) was a German theoreticalphysicist who made contributions tomathematics ,special relativity ,hydrodynamics , andaerodynamics .Hopf studied under
Arnold Sommerfeld at theUniversity of Munich , where he received his Ph.D. in 1909, on the topic ofhydrodynamics . [ [http://genealogy.math.ndsu.nodak.edu/html/id.phtml?id=53243 Ludwig Hopf] – Mathematics Genealogy Project. Dissertation: "Hydrodynamische Untersuchungen. Turbulenz bei einem Flusse. Über Schiffswellen".] Shortly after this, at a physics conference inSalzburg , Sommerfeld introduced Hopf toAlbert Einstein . Later that year, Einstein, needing an assistant at theUniversity of Zurich , hired Hopf; it was an added bonus that Hopf was a talented pianist, [Denis, 1996, p. 75.] since Einstein played the violin and liked to play duets. In 1910, he collaborated and published with Einstein two papers on classical statistical aspects of radiation. Hopf’s collaboration with Sommerfeld on integral representations ofBessel Functions resulted in the publication of a paper in 1911. [ L. Hopf und A. Sommerfeld, "Über komplexe Integraldarstellungen der Zylinderfunktionen, Archiv der Mathematik und Physik", ser. 3, 18 (1911) 1-16.] Also in that year, Hopf accompanied Einstein to the Karl-Ferdinand University inPrague ; however, he did not stay with Einstein long – due to “unsanitary conditions” in Prague. [ Denis, 1996, p. 80.] He accepted a position at theAachen Technische Hochschule , where he eventually became a professor inhydrodynamics andaerodynamics . DuringWorld War I , he contributed to the design of military aircraft. [ Clark, 1971, p. 177.] It was during his tenure at Aachen that he made a contribution to the "Handbuch der Physik" [ As cited in Pais, 1982, pp. 485 and 500: L. Hopf "Handbuch der Physik" Volume 7, p. 91 ff., (Springer, 1927)] and co-authored a “highly esteemed” book on aerodynamics. [ As cited in Pais, 1982, pp. 485 and 499: F. Fuchs and L. Hopf "Aerodynamik" (R. C. Schmidt, 1922)] In 1934, due to his being “non-Aryan”, he lost his position at Aachen; he moved toDublin ,Ireland and became a professor of mathematics at Trinity College. One of his colleagues there was the Austrian physicistsErwin Schrödinger . [ Moore, 1992, p. 359.] [ Pais, 1982, p 485. This is the source page for a biographical paragraph on Hopf.]In 1939, Hopf became seriously ill in December and died on December 21. [ Moore, 1992, p. 359.]
