Sven Birkerts (born
September 21 ,1951 ) is an Americanessayist andliterary critic of Latvian ancestry. He is best known for his book "The Gutenberg Elegies", which posits a decline in reading due to the overwhelming advances of theInternet and other technologies of the "electronic culture."Birkerts was born in
Pontiac, Michigan . He graduated fromCranbrook Kingswood School and then from theUniversity of Michigan in 1973. He has taught writing atHarvard University ,Emerson College ,Amherst College , and most recently atMount Holyoke College . Birkerts is the Director of theBennington College Writing Seminars and the editor of "AGNI", the literary journal [http://www.fawc.org/summer/wr_nonfiction.shtm] & [http://www.pifmagazine.com/SID/757/] . He now lives in theBoston area, specifically,Arlington, Massachusetts with his wife Lynn, daughter Mara, and son Liam.His father is noted architect
