.At the 2004 World Championships in
Indianapolis, Indiana , Hetland came 4th in the 100 m medley event, and at the same time he sat the Norwegian record with the time 54.44He claimed his first international swimming medal at the 2006 European championships in Helsinki where he received the bronze medal in the 100m medley. Here he improved his Norwegian record to 53.70. Hetland followed that up with success at the 2007 European Swimming Championships in Debrecen, Hungary, winning the silver medal on 50 m breaststroke and setting a new Nordic record, with 26,93.
Alex has two younger brothers, Oskar and Oyster. The oldest one, Oskar, has also worked as a part-time trainer for Hetland while being his manager. Alex often thanks him for his achievements in life, as he recently stated in an interview with Norwegian television; "Oskar is my life motivator and the inspiration which makes me train that much harder".He is a former member of
