Alexander Calder was born in
Aberdeen ,Scotland , the son of a tombstone carver. He began his career in Scotland, working for sculptor John Rhind, the father of sculptorJ. Massey Rhind while attending theRoyal Academy inEdinburgh . He moved toLondon and worked on theAlbert Memorial . Calder immigrated to theUnited States in 1868 and settled inPhiladelphia , where he took classes (as would his sonAlexander Stirling Calder ) withThomas Eakins at thePennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts . In 1873 he was hired by architect John McArthur to produce models for the sculpture for thePhiladelphia City Hall , which task was to occupy Calder for the next 20 years. Both his son,Alexander Stirling Calder and his grandsonAlexander Calder were to become significant sculptors in the 20th century. He is buried inWest Laurel Hill Cemetery in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania.Notable Works
