"Spoon" is a Dave Matthews Band song from the album "Before These Crowded Streets". The song is thought to describe the thoughts of Christ as he is pinned to the crucifix. Throughout the song, Christ contemplates such ideas as whether the human race is worth "saving" and whether his father is God, as he ponders his own existence. Dave Matthews used Peter Gabriel's song "The Passion" as an inspiration for this song [http://antsmarching.org/tour/ViewSongShows.php?SongID=54] .

The song features Alanis Morissette on background vocals and Béla Fleck on the banjo. A 1:30 reprise to "The Last Stop" is featured as a hidden track following a minute of silence after the song.

"Spoon" has been performed live as early as 1997, where it was played acoustically as a solo by Dave Matthews, or an acoustic duet with Tim Reynolds. The song debuted live by the band in the summer of 1998; however, drummer Carter Beauford did not perform as he was bothered by a large amount of crickets crawling around the stage [http://dmbalmanac.com/TourShowSet.aspx?id=453054742] . The song was only played two more times that year by the band, and then a handful of times more the following year during acoustic shows by Matthews and Reynolds. Since then, the song was not played until late 2003, where it was performed only ten times, and had not been performed again until August 9, 2008 at Alpine Valley. A live performance from 2003 was featured on the pre-order disc for "The Central Park Concert". On August 8, 2008 Spoon was played and has not been played since 9/14/2003 which was 1791 days since they played it. On September 10, 2008 Spoon was played for a Stand Up for Cure concert in New York City and was Ingrid Michaelson guested in it with the dave matthews band.

Lyrics

Spoon in spoonStirring my coffeeI thought of youAnd turned to the gateAnd on my way came upwith the answersI scratched my headAnd the answers were gone

From hand to hand,Wrist to the elbowRed blood sandCould Dad be God?Crosses cross hung outlike a wet ragForgive you? Why?You hung me out to dryAnd maybe I'm crazyBut laughing out loudMakes the pain pass byAnd maybe you're a little crazyBut laughing out loudmakes it all subsideHolding, I'm holdingI'm still falling,I'm still falling

Spoon in spoonStirring my coffeeI thought of thisAnd turned to the gateBut on my wayCrack lightning and thunderI hid my headAnd the storm slipped awayWell, maybe I'm crazyBut laughing out loudMakes it all pass byAnd maybe you're a little crazyAnd laughing out loudMakes it all alright

Laughing out loud

From time to time,Minutes and hoursSome move ahead whileSome lag behindIt's like the balloon thatRise and then vanishThis drop of hopeThat falls from his eyes

Spoon in spoonStirring my coffeeI think of thisAnd turn to go awayBut as I walkThere're voicesbehind me saying:"Sinners sin, comenow and play."

Laughing out loud...

Come now and play...

Come in from thecold for a while,Everything will be all rightCome in from thenoise for a time,Everything will be alrightEverything will be alrightFor now, goodbyeFriend, goodbye
