Henry Lewis was born on 21 August 1889 at Clydach in the Swansea Valley. An industrial valley which had retained its Welshness and he was an exceptionally able scholar at school in Ystalfera and later in the University of Wales, Cardiff.
His Academic Career
After two teaching posts he was appointed in 1919 as an assistant Lecturer in Welsh at his old College in Cardiff where he stayed for three years. Then he was appointed as Professor of Welsh at the University of Wales, Swansea where he remained for 33 years. He built up a huge reputation as an effective administrator and a no-nonesense head of Department. He was very annoyed when one of his lecturers J. Saunders Lewis was involved in the burning of an aerodrome in the LLyn peninsula in 1936. He was dismissed from his post.
His contribution
He wrote extensively in the form of articles as a grammarian and edited Hen Gerddi Crefyddol published by the University of Wales Press in 1931.
His Family Life
Lewis married in 1921 to Gwladys Thomas, the daughter of William Thomas of Treorchy in the Rhondda Valley. Two daughters were born to them. He was also a staunch member of the large, flourishing Welsh Independent Chapel of Hebron in his home town of Clydach-ar-Dawe. He served as a leader and deacon at Hebron.
Death
Dr Henry Lewis died on 14 January 1968 and the services were held at Hebron Chapel and later at Morriston Crematorium.
