Sir John Dick Lauder of Fountainhall, 8th Baronet, (born
April 21 at Relugas, and baptisedJune 5 ,1813 at Edinkillie,Moray shire - diedMarch 23 ,1867 ,Bournemouth ,Hampshire ), was aDeputy lieutenant andmagistrate forMidlothian , andJustice of the Peace forWigtownshire . Thomas Dick Lauder , 7th Baronet, in 1848.In his early years John served for two years in the Portuguese Army during that country's Civil War, which ended in 1834. He joined, that year, the
Honourable East India Company 'sBengal Army as a Cadet and was raised to an Ensign in June the following year in the North India Regiment. He arrived in India onJuly 28 ,1835 and was promoted tolieutenant onDecember 15 ,1838 . OnFebruary 14 ,1839 he was appointedadjutant to the HEIC's Jalaun Corps (which later became the Bundelkhand Legion), and served in disturbances inBundelkhand (1840-1), Jigni, andChirgaon , and became Acting Captain-Commandant ofcavalry , Bundelkhand Legion, onJanuary 24 ,1842 . He was inSingapore andChina for 10 months in 1843-4, returning to India and the Legion the latter year. He retired from that army onMay 19 ,1847 [ Hodson, Major V.C.P., "List of the Officers of theBengal Army, 1758 - 1834", London, 1945, part III: 20 ] returning to civilian life in Scotland.He was later a Knight of Justice of the
Order of St. John of Jerusalem , and had two seats: Fountainhall Manor, nrPencaitland , Grange House, nr.Edinburgh , and a residence in Edinburgh at 13 Grosvernor Crescent.Sir John married at St.Cuthbert's, Edinburgh, on
May 22 ,1845 , Lady Anne (1820-1919), daughter ofNorth Hamilton Dalrymple, 9th Earl of Stair . They had four sons and three daughters. He was succeeded by his eldest son and heir, Sir Thomas North Dick-Lauder, 9th Baronet.Sir John's death was reported in the "
