September 14 ,1920 –April 16 ,1998 ) was an Argentinemathematician best known for his work on the theory ofpartial differential equations andsingular integral operator s, and widely considered as one of the 20th century's most important mathematicians. He was born in Mendoza, and died inChicago .Calderón graduated in
civil engineering from theUniversity of Buenos Aires in 1947 and gained aPh.D. in mathematics from theUniversity of Chicago in 1950.In 1958 Calderón published one of his most important results, on uniqueness of solution of the
Cauchy problem forpartial differential equations . With his Ph.D. supervisor and mentorAntoni Zygmund he formulated theCalderón-Zygmund theory of singular integral operators.During his career he held academic posts at
Ohio State University , theInstitute for Advanced Study, Princeton , theMassachusetts Institute of Technology and theUniversity of Chicago , from which he retired in 1985. He was awarded many prizes for his work including theBôcher Memorial Prize in 1975, the Wolf Prize in 1989, and theNational Medal of Science in 1991. Calderón has anErdős number of 3.The Calderón prize of the Inverse Problems International Association is named in his honor.
