Trick Shot began his professional career as an archer in a traveling circus. There, he met a boy named Clint Barton, who would later become the master archer and Avenger Hawkeye. Although Swordsman had been training the young boy in the art of throwing knives, Swordsman thought the boy might have more value to him as an archer and arranged for Trick Shot, then the star attraction of Carson's Carnival of Traveling Wonders, to take over his training.
After the Swordsman robbed the carnival's paymaster to pay off gambling debts, Clint Barton came upon him counting the money and the Swordsman tried to kill Barton, seriously injuring him before Trick Shot intervened and saved his life. Once Clint recovered, Trick Shot involved him in an extortion scheme, which coincidentally involved the man that loaned money to the Swordsman. Trick Shot killed the man, and Barton shot one of the guards with an arrow - the guard turned out to be Barton's older brother Barney. Shocked by what he had done, Clint rebelled and the two archers shot at each other. The more experienced Trick Shot impaled Barton on a tree and told him that he would come back to kill him.
Years later, Trick Shot learned that he was dying of cancer, and sought out Barton, now known as the Avenger Hawkeye, to die in an honorable duel. The two men fought, but though Hawkeye won, he would not kill his old mentor. Trick Shot later learned that the criminal Crossfire had hired a group of criminals to kill Hawkeye and intervened, saving his life again.
