April 7 ,1826 –March 8 ,1897 ) was aPrussian immigrant to theUnited States who served as a Union brigadier general in theAmerican Civil War .Salomon had settled in
Wisconsin , where he was the chief engineer withManitowoc and Wisconsin railroad.In 1861 he joined the Missouri 5th Infantry and was present at Wilson's Creek. He was appointed
colonel of the9th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment , and made a brigadier general in 1862. OnSeptember 30 ,1862 , he made an unsuccessful attempt to captureNewtonia, Missouri , during theFirst Battle of Newtonia . He commanded the victorious Union troops at theBattle of Helena , Missouri. In 1865 he received the brevet of major general.He died in
