Ching Chuan Kang Airport was constructed during the Japanese colonial period and was named Gongguan Airport (zh-t|公館機場). The airport then expanded in
1954 according to theSino-American Mutual Defense Treaty , and later renamedChing Chuan Kang Air Base in memory of General Chiu Ching Chuan onMarch 20 ,1966 with the airport code CCK. It was the largest air force base in theFar East at the time, allowingB-52 Stratofortress to land. During theVietnam War , Ching Chuan Kang has become a depot for the US Air Force. US Air Force had been garrisoning with twoF-4 Phantom II squadron until theSino-American Mutual Defense Treaty came into force on March 3, 1955.As to the civil service, the passenger facilities have constructed since
September 4 ,2003 , and open to service onMarch 5 ,2004 , replacing the old Shuinan Airport (zh-t|水湳機場) located in downtown Taichung. Ching Chuan Kang Airport has ever since become the only airport serving Taichung.Airlines and destinations
