Reverse conducting thyristor (RCT) is high-power switching semiconductor device similar to thyristor with integrated reverse diode. This thyristor is not capable of reverse blocking mode.
These devices are advantageous where reverse or freewheel diode must be used. Because the SCR and diode never conducts at the same time, thus do not need simultaneous colling, they can be placed together and use less space and smaller cooler.
Reverse conducting thyristors are often used in frequency changers and inverters.
