Rockbridge County High School was built in 1992 to include all students in
Rockbridge County and Lexington, Virginia in grades 9-12. This school consolidated the former Rockbridge High School, Lexington High School, and Natural Bridge High School. It is operated by Rockbridge County Public Schools] . The school's mascot is the Wildcat.ierra Leone Project
In recent years the school has been recognized for its successful "
Sierra Leone Project" which has been sponsored by the RCHS Interact Club. Students voluntarily raised money and school supplies for a technical school inKenema which had been destroyed in a civil war. Through RCHS's efforts, the school has been rebuilt and improved.Other school organizations include
National Honor Society , Interact Club, Spanish, French, and Latin Club, the award winning school newspaper "The Prowler" and the nationally renowned "Trivium"yearbook .Talent Show
The Prowler staff holds a yearly talent show, a popular event and outlet for students to display their various talents. Staples of the talent show include the comical emcee acts in between each act, and the Prowler 5 dance routine. The
RCHS Talent Show raises the money needed to print the school's newspaper.Sports
Rockbridge County High School currently supports 13 Varsity teams, including Football, Volleyball, Girl's and Boy's Basketball, Girl's and Boy's Lacrosse, Golf, Swimming, Baseball, Softball, Girl's and Boy's Soccer, Girl's and Boy's Tennis and 8 Junior Varsity teams including Football, Volleyball, Baseball, Girl's and Boy's Soccer, Softball, Girl's and Boy's Basketball as well as an Academic Team and Athletic Trainers.
The Wildcats are the epitome of sportsmanship and fair play. They are praised all over the district for focusing on such things.
Football
The Wildcats are an AA Division 4 team, and play in the eight team
AA Southern Valley District . In 2006 Rockbridge lost the State Championship playoffs to the Richlands High School Blue Tornados, by a close score of 28 - 29.Volleyball
The Volleyball team is currently having its best season in school history.
Womens Soccer
The RCHS 2008 Womens Soccer Team had its best season in school history and became the first womens' team to defeat Turner Ashby High School in the Southern Valley District.
Academics
Rockbridge County High School offers a wide variety of classes that appeal to each and every student. Most students are required to enroll in 4 academic classes which include English, History/Social Studies, Mathematics, and Science. Students then have 3 elective classes which vary from Business courses, Foreign Languages, Vocational/Technical (VoTech) classes, Art, Band, Chorus, or they can take more than one class from a subject area.
Classes
Most basic academic classes have three different levels. These include:
*Foundations/Skills Development: These classes are designed for students who need to move at a slower pace. They need more teacher help, instead of working independently.
*Core: These classes are for the average student. The classes cover the basic materials and go at a moderate pace.
*College Preparatory (CP): These classes are for the college-bound student. They are more advanced than Core classes, but not as much as Honors Classes.
*Honors/Dual Enrollment/Advanced Placement: These classes are for the more advanced students. They cover more material than CP and Core, and move at a more rigorous pace. Dual Enrollment classes are conjoined withDabney S. Lancaster Community College , and students can earn college credit if they receive a "C" or higher in the class. Advanced Placement classes require student to take an examination at the end of the year to determine how much knowledge the student has acquired during the year.Advanced Placement classes that are offered at RCHS include:
