The route was altered in 1995 on the completion of the
Black Country Spine Road . It was swallowed up into the A41 atGreat Bridge and re-emerged a mile or so north atWednesbury before continuing the remainder of the route unchanged. The "old" section of the A461 became part of the B4517 and the A4037, while a section of it became unclassified.Dudley Bypass
In 1999 the route suffered another alteration, this time around Dudley. It was diverted along the new bypass. The old section of A461 became A4101 and A459
