The A230 is a short
road running north-south in theMedway town ofChatham inKent . The whole length of the road is withinSwale Borough Council and is a non-primary route .Route
Present route
The road begins in the centre of
Chatham , at a T-junction with the A231, which once formed part of the ring-road in Chatham, but has know been altered to allow two-way traffic. The road briefly travels south-westwards under the A2 where there is a junction with the A2 itself, involving a small one-way system around a pub.The road then travels southwards for most of the remainder of its length along "Maidstone Road". The area surrounding the road is relatively built-up with residential housing. Approximately 1.9 miles along the A230 the road bends to the right onto "Horsted Way", heading in a south-westerly direction, where it terminates at a roundabout adjacent to
Mid Kent College , at a junction with the A229 with links to both Rochester andMaidstone .Previous route
Before the 1930s, the A229 took a more westerly route down what is known as the B2097 Maidstone Road towards Borstal. This allowed the A230 to extend a further mile, down what is today known as the A229, until it terminated at Bridgewood Gate, where it met with the A229. However, a new road was built in the 1930’s between Horsted College and Rochester city centre, which was numbered the ‘A229’, resulting with the A230 losing approximately a mile of its original length.
