County Route S1 (CR S1) is a scenic rural route in the mountains east of San Diego, California. North of I-8, it is the Sunrise Scenic Byway, a National Scenic Byway.

Route summary

Route S1 begins at a junction with State Route 94 at Cameron Corners near Campo. It runs north about 10 miles on Buckman Springs Road, crossing over Cottonwood Creek and the Pacific Crest Trail.

It runs west about 3 miles on old U.S. Route 80, crosses over Interstate 8 and runs north about 23 miles to its end at a junction with State Route 79 near Lake Cuyamaca.

Landmarks and points of interest

Sunrise Highway, the northern portion of Route S1, is considered one of the best scenic drives in San Diego County. It runs along the eastern edge of Cleveland National Forest at an average elevation of 6000 feet. In several locations along the route, steep canyons drop down thousands of feet to Colorado Desert floor. Region adjacent to Sunrise Highway is among few areas in San Diego County that develop snow cover during the winter.
