The school was opened in 1968 to replace an overcrowded Washington High School, which became the Warren Hills Regional Middle School for the new regional district. The building received an expansion in the early 1990s, which included a new library and gym. Ground was recently broken on a new expansion to meet growing enrollment in the district.

The school was the 179th-ranked public high school in New Jersey out of 316 schools statewide, in "New Jersey Monthly" magazine's September 2008 cover story on the state's "Top Public High Schools". The school was ranked 175th in the magazine's September 2006 issue, which surveyed 316 schools across the state. Academics

The school maintains a rigorous academic program which prepares students for a future of diverse opportunities, including Advanced Placement Program (AP) and honors classes, electives to suit a wide range of interests, and classes to help students succeed on the High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA). The school uses a rotating block schedule, which supports classes of 54 minutes, combined with a 50 minute common lunch. During this lunch period, students are able to socialize and receive extra help, enjoy club activities, receive guidance services, and engage in our peer leadership and mentoring programs.

School to work transition activities are available through Cooperative Education programs. In addition, the WINGS program provides students with the experience of running an actual business within the school. Educational teams and leadership activities are enhanced in this program through partnerships with local businesses.

Warren Hills also offers a Senior Option Program where students in grade 12 have an opportunity to attend college classes or perform professional internship responsibilities with local business, schools, or corporations.

The Warren Hills School District utilizes the K-12 Planet communication system to provide parents and students with online access to grades, homework, and class announcements.

Warren Hills Regional High School was recently ranked the second best high school in Warren County by "New Jersey Monthly" magazine.

Controvesy

The school has had quite a bit of controversy in recent years as a court case in 2002 was filed by a student for wearing a shirt the school deemed inappropriate. After refusing to let the student wear the shirt inside out, he filed a court case that eventually led to a Supreme Court decision that it was to be allowed, and that the school was in the wrong for violating first amendment rights. Athletics

The High School's athletic teams, known as the Blue Streaks, compete in the Skyland Conference against teams in Warren, Hunterdon, and Somerset Counties. Some of the schools biggest sports rivals include nearby Hackettstown High School and Phillipsburg High School.

Warren Hills Wrestling was started by Frank Bennet who is in the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Bennet also started the program at Fair Lawn High School in Fair Lawn, New Jersey.Fact|date=May 2008

Warren Hills wrestling ranks second all-time in the number of individual State Champions crowned.fact|date=April 2007 It has produced such notables as Dan Slack, who beat future Olympian Bruce Baumgartner on way to the State Heavyweight crown in 1977, and Ben Oberly who was a two-time State Champion (and placed 3rd his sophomore year) and ranked #1 at his weight in the nation in 1986. After a period of stability in the coaching ranks with John Goles, Richard Kerr, and Jim Reynolds serving almost 50 years at the school, there has been much turnover within the last decade. The traditional rivalry with Phillipsburg has been lopsided in recent years, though those who saw the 1990 Warren Hills State Champion Team beat Phillipsburg twice in one year got some much-needed satisfaction.

The wrestling team won the 2007 North II, Group III state sectional championship with a 33-29 win against Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School.
