Garranlea (Gaelic "Gearran Liath") is a
townland of theRoman Catholic parish of New Inn and Knockgraffon inCounty Tipperary ,Ireland . Like almost all Irishtownland s, Garranlea is very old, and almost certainly dates to the EarlyChristian period, if not before. It was documented in the 1659Down Survey undertaken byWilliam Petty , and had at that time apopulation of [http://www.rootsweb.com/~irltip/Records/MidlethirdBarony1659.htm twelve] .Today Garranlea is almost exclusively an
agricultural area , covering approximately 500 hectares.Dairy ing andsheep -farming are the principal activities. Garranlea House was the residence of theCooney s, aCatholic landowningfamily prominent in the area during the 1800s and the first half of the 1900s.There is also an old Catholic
cemetery in Garranlea, where Moll MacArthy, a local woman who wasmurder ed in the 1940s, isburied .
