Shapeshifting into a bird

"Emma Tolly" is a fictional character of Jenny Nimmo's Children of the Red King series.

Emma Tolly was the only child of the late Dr. Mostyn Tolly and the late Nancy Tolly née Ingledew. Shortly after her mother's death, baby Emma was traded to the Bloor family by her father and cared for by the Moons under the assumed name Emilia Moon until age ten. She was kept under constant hypnosis by Manfred Bloor. Shortly after her father's death, she was rescued by Charlie Bone and his friends using an invention (Tolly Twelve Bells) that Dr. Tolly had created and couriered to her aunt, Julia Ingledew. Upon the end of the hypnosis, Emma began living with her aunt above the bookshop which Julia owns.

A descendant of the Red King, Emma is endowed with the ability to picture, and transfigure into, any winged creature. It is implied that this is the reason the Bloors took her, as they aim to control all endowed children for their own purposes.

Emma is a student at Bloor's Academy, studying art. She is said to be an exceptional painter. She is good friends with Olivia Vertigo and was once saved by Asa Pike in the fifth book. She has a pet duck named Nancy after her mother.

It is revealed in the sixth book that she has a crush on Tancred Torrson, the storm manipulator.
