Novi Sad Theatre

Novi Sad Theatre

The Novi Sad Theatre or in Hungarian Újvidéki Színház (Serbian: Новосадско позориште) is a small Hungarian theatre. It is located in the Rotkvarija neighborhood, near city centre on Jovana Subotića street 3-5, in Novi Sad, the capital of the Serbian province Vojvodina.

The theatre was established in 1974, and its first play was Örkény István Macskajátéka, which was held on January 27, 1974. During that time, there was only one Hungarian language theatre in Vojvodina and it was located in Subotica. However, Novi Sad was quickly becoming a cultural capital of Vojvodina, thereby hastening the need to add one more theatre for Hungarians in Novi Sad, which made up the second largest ethnic group in the region.
