The college was founded in 30 November 1976 as the Royal Guard Mechanical School and at the 1998 changed its name to a Technical College because the college has moved to a higher level of education and the college is also is moving to more higher education as they move to new campus and more facilities will be taught at the college. Study at the college begins after the 4th year of school. Candidates must complete two exams, in math and Arabic, and the top students can be admitted to the college.

The Royal guard of Oman Technical College was founded in the 30 November 1976 by the Sultan Qaboos bin Said the Sultan of Oman as the Royal Guard Mechanical School it was later renamed as a technical college at 1997 as the education gets higher. The college was founded in order to find an educated youth at the Mechanical engineering and Technology and to improve the Country's high education. The college started till now successfully and that is most of the graduated students from this college holds a real important jobs such as the main engineers at the Petroleum Development of Oman or other companies which are the most important companies in the Industrial Sector in the country or one of the most important engineers at the Government or the Royal Army of Oman.
The college is one of the oldest colleges in the country. After six years when the Sultan Qaboos has ruled Oman so the college launched the plan to the new campus for the college where the college education goes to a more higher level and get more facilities to be educated.
Academics
At the Royal Guard of Oman Technical College, they graduate students to be Mechanical Engineer.So they provide a wide range of qualifications including General Certificate of Education, and A levels; GNVQs and the College was registered as an International General Certificate of Secondary Education centre in 1994. To give high ability students as wide range of qualifications as possible, increasing numbers of students are being entered for these IGCSE examinations in English as a second language, mathematics, Science and Arabic language.
When students graduate, they will have received the High National Diploma in Engineering after achieveing the engineering foundation and the First Diploma in Engineering and the for the next following years National Diploma in Engineering each course has two years to be submitted otherwise students cant go for the next level.
Because students start at an early age, courses cover the basics plus extra lessons which will help them achieve the assignments such as the Mechanical Engineering and the Technical drawing where the college start these two subjects from the third year at college but students have Workshop lesson in Second year so they can start the Mechanical engineering in the following years. Electronics lesson is taught also but from the fifth year and students also still study subjects that students from other schools study such as Arabic Language, Islamic Studies and Social Science.Cooperative education
As students start the sixth and the seventh year of college. They are given the chance to experience work outside the classroom so they can appreciate the link between education and possible future careers. In sixth year student, these placements are for two weeks factories on Industrial Estate.
In the following year, the students are given the chance to apply to various companies for three weeks of work experience. In the history of the college, companies such as Petroleum Development Oman and Royal Marine of Oman have accepted students to get this internship with them.
In the sixth year, student groups consisting of three or four students are sent to a factory on the Industrial Estate that agree to train these students for two weeks, some factories have stopped accepting students to train with them where the college administration have looked for another factories that accepted them on to work.
In the seventh year, students put three choices to join the place to work at which are given to choose from. The college administration tries to put the students to the first choice if not to the second then the third. Students stay three weeks instead of two as for the sixth-year students.See also
