Articulation
In many Countries such as India, successful completion of the Diploma of Engineering Studies (subject to course selection) allows articulation (also known as Lateral Entry) into the second year of Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Technology programs.
Diploma in Engineering in India
In India a Diploma in Engineering is a specific academic award usually awarded in technical/vocational courses e.g. Engineering, Pharmacy, Designing, etc. Studies of Diploma in Engineering is usually held in Polytechnic institutes recognized by respective State Boards of Technical Education/Examination (e.g. Uttar Pradesh Board of Technical Education) and/or State Departments/Directorates of Technical Educations (e.g. Directorate of Technical Education, U.P., Department of Technical Education, U.P.) and All India Council for Technical Education.
Diploma in Engineering is highly recognized in India as the students comes with Strong hands-on practical & Engineering experience. Professionals holding Diploma in Engineering usually start their career as Junior Engineers.[1]
Diploma Holders are eligible for Associate Member of the Institution of Engineers (A.M.I.E), which is equivalent to the BE Degree. Diploma holders are also eligible for lateral entry to the third semester Engineering Courses in various Technical Universities like UPTU, VTU, etc.
Status of Diploma in Engineering with respect to other Degrees
Diploma in engineering in comparison to corresponding Bachelor of engineering or technology is lower but equivalent to comparative bachelor of science degree, e.g. diploma in engineering in electronics is lower in rank than bachelor of technology in electronics engineering but is equivalent to bachelor of science i.e. BSc in electronics. Also Diplomas are little bit specific in nature e.g. Diploma in Engineering of Electronics Engineering may be in Advanced Communication Systems (ACS) or Integrated Circuits (IC) or Industrial Electronics (IE), etc.
Guidelines of AICTE for Diploma in Engineering
As per All India Council for Technical Education guidelines the minimum qualification for admission to diploma programmes in engineering should be a pass in the 10+ (Secondary School Leaving Certificate Examination) with a minimum aggregate of 60 per cent marks in Science and Mathematics in a single sitting. The duration of Diploma programme in Engineering will be not less 3 years, after 10th standard unless specified otherwise by the AICTE. The duration of new programmes in emerging technology areas as well as those based on flexible modular structures with multipoint entry will have to be considered separately.
