The city’s existence owes much to the fresh spring in Inokashira joining the Kanda river, which is now part of Inokashira park. The name "Kichijoji", or "Temple of the Goddess of Beauty, Happiness and Prosperity" (吉祥 being derived from 吉祥天, Kichijōten, and 寺 the sign for Buddhist temple) , is a popular name throughout Japan. However, this Kichijoji, situated close to Tokyo, was always a centre for education and the arts. Other than the park, Kichijoji’s attraction lies in its diversity in culture, people and mix of restaurants.
