September 18 1910 –August 25 2008 ) was anIsrael icomposer . He was born in the town of Pinne (Pniewy),German Empire (presentPoland ). Soon after his birth his family moved toBerlin .Tal studied in Berlin at the "Staatliche Akademische Hochschule fuer Musik" with
Paul Hindemith ,Max Trapp andHeinz Tiessen . In 1927 he established an electronic music studio. During these years he worked as a pianist accompanying dancers and silent movies. In March 1934, with the rise ofNazism , he emigrated toPalestine and became a member ofKibbutz Gesher . In 1936 he settled inJerusalem , where he performed as apianist , taught piano lessons and played with the newly-foundedPalestine Orchestra as a substituteharpist . His early years in Jerusalem among the intellectual circles dominated by the poetElse Lasker-Schüler are reflected upon in hiscantata "Else" (1975). He was soon appointed to teach the piano and composition at the Palestine Conservatory. In 1951 Tal was appointed to a post atHebrew University . There he established the first electronic music studio in Israel. His comprehensive acoustical research led to the development of a notational system for computer-generated composition. In 1965 he was among the founders of the department of musicology at the Hebrew University, where he was appointed professor and chair. His awards include the Israel Prize (1971), three Engel Prizes, the Arts Prize of the City of Berlin (1975), the Wolff Prize (1983) and the J.W. Stamitz Prize (1995). He was also elected an honorary member of theAmerican Academy of Arts and Letters .Compositions
