Catholic high school in Minot,North Dakota . It is located in the Diocese of Bismarck, and is a part of Minot Catholic Schools. The school opened in 1959, replacing St. Leo's, and was named for Vincent James Ryan, the second bishop of the diocese (1939-51). Bishop Ryan's campus is at the base of Minot's north hill, betweenMinot State University and Broadway (US-83). A combination high school and middle school, Bishop Ryan serves grades 6-12.Education
Bishop Ryan offers all the standard classes for junior high and high school students, including history and social sciences, mathematics (up through
calculus ), sciences (up throughphysics ), and a wide range of English courses. Elective courses vary from an array of art classes to band. Religion is required of all Catholic students, but the individual topics of each religion class change from course to course.Athletics
Bishop Ryan's mascot is a
lion , with the girls' teams referred to as the Lady Lions. The school has sports programs in the following: football,volleyball ,tennis , dance, cheer-leading, track and field,baseball ,softball ,basketball , cross-country, andwrestling . The school competes in the smaller school division (Class B), except for football (Class AA). North Dakota expanded to a four-tier system (AAA, AA, A, 9-man) for high school football in 1997, from a three-tier system (A, B, 9-man) introduced in 1975. Prior to 1975, there was only one classification for football.Ryan's first head coach in
basketball in 1959 was a 24 year-old Dale Brown, later thehead coach at LSU for 25 seasons (1972-97).Championships
