Lemuel Stetson

Lemuel Stetson (March 13, 1804 - May 17, 1868) was a United States Representative from New York. Born in Champlain, Clinton County, he attended the public schools and Plattsburg Academy. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1824 and commenced practice in Keeseville, Essex County. He was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1835, 1836, and 1842, and was district attorney of Clinton County from 1838 to 1843. He was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-eighth Congress, holding office from March 4, 1843 to March 3, 1845; while in the House he was chairman, Committee on District of Columbia. He was a member of the New York constitutional convention in 1846 and was again a member of the State assembly in 1846. He moved to Plattsburgh in 1847 and was judge of Clinton County from 1847 to 1851. He was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention at Baltimore in 1860. He resumed the practice of law and died in Plattsburg in 1868; interment in Riverside Cemetery.
