Born in
Malta to a working-class family of Caribbean descent and raised in and aroundBirmingham , Piper was first attracted to art as a response to the industrialized landscape of his childhood. While a student atTrent Polytechnic , Piper joinedEddie Chambers and other artists to form The BLK Art Group. These artists sought to explore issues relevant to aspects of black political struggles, both in Britain and internationally. Piper went on to study at theRoyal College of Art in London. Piper also works to develop black British artists.His work is held in the collections of the
