The paracolic gutters (paracolic sulci, paracolic recesses) are spaces between the colon and theabdominal wall .Peritoneal (paracolic) gutters are spaces, or recesses, between the colon and the abdominal wall.
There are four peritoneal (paracolic) gutters:
* right lateral gutter
* left lateral gutter
* gutter to the right of the mesentery
* gutter to the left of the mesentery
These gutters are clinically important because they allow a passage for infectious fluids from different compartments of the abdomen.
