USS "Barry" (DD-2), a "Bainbridge"-class
destroyer , was the first ship of theUnited States Navy to be named for Commodore John Barry (1745 –1803 )."Barry" was launched on
22 March 1902 byNeafle and Levy Ship and Engine Building Company ,Philadelphia, Pennsylvania ; sponsored by MissCharlotte Adams Barnes , great-grandniece of Commodore Barry: and commissioned on24 November 1902 ,Lieutenant Noble Edward Irwin in command."Barry" was assigned to the
1st Torpedo Flotilla ,Coast Squadron ,North Atlantic Fleet , and during the summer of1903 participated in maneuvers off theNew England coast. In December1903 she departed the East Coast and sailed via theSuez Canal to theAsiatic Station , arriving in April1904 .On the Asiatic Station she served with the 1st Torpedo Flotilla,
Battleship Squadron , until August1917 , except for two short periods (2 April –21 December 1908 and on21 October 1912 –24 June 1913 ) out of commission."Barry" departed the
Philippine Islands , on1 August 1917 and sailed via the Suez Canal forGibraltar , arriving20 October . She escorted merchantmen in theMediterranean until August1918 and arrived at Charleston,South Carolina , on5 September 1918 . She remained there until the end of the year performing patrol and convoy duties. In January1919 she left forPhiladelphia Navy Yard where she went out of commission on28 June 1919 and was sold on3 January 1920 to Joseph G. Hitner, Philadelphia, PA.Notes
