Sir Richard Newdigate, 1st Baronet (1602 – 1678) was born at Arbury Hall, near Nuneaton.
He was the son of Richard and Alice Newdigate, whose family had exchanged their family home at Harefield Place, near Uxbridge, Middlesex for Arbury Hall in 1586.
He was a successful and wealthy barrister and was briefly, in 1660, MP for Tamworth, Staffordshire, and also Lord Chief Justice under the Commonwealth. He was awarded a baronetcy by Charles II in 1677. He bought back Harefield Place but retained Arbury Hall.
He married Juliana Leigh, daughter of Sir Francis Leigh of Newnham Regis in 1630.
He was High Steward of the Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield from 1646 until his death.
