- Giulio Polerio
Giulio Cesare Polerio (1548,
Lanciano - 1612,Rome ) was an Italianchess player. In 1575, Polerio, who was nicknamed "l'Abruzzese" because Lanciano is in the
Abruzzo region in Italy, accompanied his friendGiovanni Leonardo toMadrid . He and Leonardo played together as a team, contesting their chess skills against the formidableRuy Lopez and Spain's other master chess player,Alfonso Ceron . Later the Italians were joined byPaolo Boi , also known as "Il Siracusano".After the contest of 1575, Polerio decided to remain in Madrid. A number of manuscripts written between 1580 and 1600 have been ascribed to him. It is mainly due to Polerio's works that it is possible to appreciate Spanish and Italian chess of the period.
After returning to Rome, Polerio became a chess master for the Prince of Buoncompagno. In 1606, he lost a match to
Geronimo Cascio in Rome.References
