George Nugent, Baron Nugent of Guildford

George Richard Hodges Nugent, Baron Nugent of Guildford, PC, (6 June 1907 – 16 March 1994), was a British politician.

The son of Colonel George Roubiliac Hodges Nugent and Violet Stella Sheppard, he was Member of Parliament (MP) for Guildford for the Conservatives from 1950 to 1966.

He was appointed a member of the Privy Council on 26 February 1962. [ [http://www.leighrayment.com/pcouncil/pcouncil3.htm List of UK Privy Counsellors] ] He was made a Baronet, of Dunsfold in the County of Surrey in 1960 and on 31 May 1966 a life peer with the title Baron Nugent of Guildford, of Dunsfold in the County of Surrey.

He was President of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), and in 1981 succeeded in introducing seat belt legislation through an amendment to the Transport Bill. [ [http://www.rospa.com/history/1980s.htm History of RoSPA: The 1980s] ]

Nugent was married to Ruth Stafford, daughter of Hugh Granville Stafford, since 29 July 1937. He and his wife were both awarded honorary doctorates by the University of Surrey on 2 December 1968.
