Clarence Sumner Janifer

Clarence Sumner Janifer (1886-1950)

Clarence Sumner Janifer (1886 – November 14, 1950) was the first African American member of the Medical Society of New Jersey.

He lived in Newark, New Jersey and graduated from the New York Homeopathic Medical College in 1915. He practiced in Newark as a pediatrician. He was the first African American member of the Medical Society of New Jersey when he joined in 1916. During World War I he was a medical officer in the infantry, and was awarded the Croix de Guerre. He then worked for the Newark Health Department, and received two master's degrees in public health.
