For other uses, see Colander (disambiguation).
A colander is a bowl-shaped kitchen utensil with holes in it used for draining food[1] such as pasta or rice.
The perforated nature of the colander allows liquid to drain through while retaining the solids inside. It is sometimes also called a strainer or kitchen sieve.
Conventionally, colanders are made of a light metal, such as aluminium[2] or thinly rolled stainless steel, [3] but some colanders are made of plastic or silicone.[4]A distinct feature of silicone colanders is that they are often made collapsable for easy storage.
The word colander comes from the Latin colum meaning sieve.[5]
The colander or sieve, in the form of pasta strainer, was recognized by Austrian authorities as a religious headgear of Pastafarianism.[6]
