John Marshall High School is a public high school located in Glen Dale, West Virginia. It is operated by Marshall County Schools, which is administrated by an elected, five-member Board of Education.

Background

Named after John Marshall, the fourth Chief Justice of the United States, the school was established in 1968 as a result of the consolidation of three smaller schools in Marshall County, West Virginia -- Moundsville High School, Union High School and Sherrard High School. At its inception, John Marshall boasted one of the few modular scheduling systems in the United States. This earned the school much recognition and a reputation for academic excellence. As of the 1994-1995 school year, John Marshall High School runs a traditional eight period day offering students half-credit one semester courses and full-credit two semester courses.

The student body of John Marshall High School numbers over 1,200 in grades 9 through 12, making it one of the largest secondary schools in West Virginia. The curriculum is comprehensive, including a county-wide vocational program. The school also offers dual-credit college courses and boasts a fully-operational CollegeBoard Advanced Placement (AP) Program.

John Marshall High School is located at the base of the northern panhandle in West Virginia. The Mason-Dixon line lies 14 miles to the south and Wheeling, the first capitol of the break-away state of West Virginia, lies 10 miles to the north. The valley in which the school sits was home to mound-building Adena Culture in the days before our recordings of history began. The Glen Dale of today, which is the home of John Marshall High School, is a quiet residential community along the Ohio River. It is notably the home of former West Virginia Republican Governor Arch A. Moore, Jr., and the childhood home of his daughter, current West Virginia Republican Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito.
